Breaking through- post 3

Quote: "And for you, Panchito, we got you this new bust of Jesus Christ to replace the one that's chipped"- page 44

Response: This quote gave me one thing. Love was that one thing. Love is the whole purpose i chose this quote. They had love towards the brother and prayer for him. Some people believe there is nothing better you can do but pray and i agree. There is nothing else. So in this quote it kinda of tied in with the rest of this chapter. That when Panchito got this new bust of Christ he replaced it with a chipped piece, he replaced it with something better. I found love throughout this quote, Panchito gaining new items which increases his strength in Christ, and i also see prayer for the little brother.

Question: Do you think the brother will get better because of their prayers and the family taking their time to sit next to him for support?

Quote: "Mr. Sims was angry with me because I missed so many weeks from work. He said he didn't know where I was, so he hired someone else."- page 21

Response: I feel in this quote Mr. Sims has the right to be mad at someone not far in the book because Francisco missed so many weeks of work which is crucial to most people because of lacking cash. For someone to say that they don't know where they are because you ditched work or you "had something better to do" is just inexcusable. I feel this quote gives us a little idea of where Francisco wants to lead his life. At this moment of the book i felt he didn't want to go far in life and he just wanted to be a poor person who lives under all the successful people. It could change as i read more but for now I'm not convinced that Francisco has the courage or the mind set to do what is right in this situation and to me that is to go to work and put your full hours in.

Question: Do you think Francisco will change. Do you think he will be able to start putting in the work and not miss it so much?

The Ciruit- Post 2

Quote: "It's bad manners. He's Mr. Diaz, the contratista. He runs the bracero camp for Sheehey Berry Farms. The man with him is one of the braceros."- page 87...Francisco Jimenez

Response: I chose this quote because the Mr. Diaz was from braceros and he should of been kind to people who you know is very important especially if your still young. This quote shows Mr. Diaz, the contratista who gets noticed by Francisco was too eager to know who it was. The berry farm is an important place for Francisco's family because that's a place where most people get their berries and food. This quote showed what you shouldn't do when you see someone. This quote is an example of what you shouldn't do but also may help you in what you should be doing. I liked this quote because now i know not to point at people because it is very bad manners and to take a calmer approach.

Question: What do you think will happen if Francisco points again? What will you think his dad will do and why?

Quote: "Let me tell you a story I heard when i was a little girl. Long ago there lived a very smart ant who saved her pennies for so many years that she became rich. Many animals wanted to marry her but they frightened her. The cat mewed too much, the parrot talked too much, and the dog barked too loud. A bull and a goat also scared her, but not a little brown mouse named El Ratoncito. He was quiet, intelligent, polite, and mannerly. They got married and lived happily for a long time. But one day when the ant was cooking a pot of beans, she fell in it and drowned, leaving El Ratoncito with a lot of pennies, but terribly sad and alone. So you see, Mijito, Rorra is more important than the pennies. Don't be so hard on your little sister."- Page 107-108...

Response: I felt this was one of the greatest quote. The reason i chose this great story was because the story told a lot about what was going on in the book. The story was basically just a story to stop Mijito from being mad at Rorra. It had a great background, like in the end, the mom said " they got married and lived happily ever after but one day the ant fell in the pot of beans and drowned". That was very shocking to me because after a great life they were living it all came to a dead end when the mouse lost a wife and he was all alone. I like this quote because Mijito needs to stop worrying about Rorra and start forgiving people.

Question: If you were in Mijito's shoes, would you forgive Rorra and listen to your mom and her stories? or would you be like Mijito in the book and still be mad at Rorra and why?

Field Trip Reflection

The purpose of the exhibit was to see how Jews started a new life by coming over to America to settle. They would come because there lives they had recently were filled with poverty, war, etc. When they came to America they faced a different lifestyles. When they all came off the boat, everyone would split directions each wanted a different life. Usually people came from New york and Boston then just split directions after that. Because of the change in the style of people, i meant there started to be a change with the younger kids growing up and making life around their a little different.

Changing the life in a certain can change the style in the country drastically. So when the immigrants came to America, problems in their own country increased. While the Jews were being killed in Europe, Jews in America were pretty mad and wanted to do something. But while American Jews wanted to help, Jews from Europe fled to America.

There were many interesting things that occur ed to me in the exhibit. Some very interesting things that i myself was very surprised about was something about baseball. I love baseball and hearing this was a shock because i never knew about it. A ball player who almost broke Babe Ruth's home run record and four other records was a Jewish man named Hank Greenberg. Some other interesting facts were that Jews fought for our new nation during the American revolution.

Some other interesting facts i learned were that the national Jewish welfare board has met the religious and social needs of Jews serving in the united states military since 1917.

CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS

The photo i chose was called "Children playing games from the U.S.A". This was a photo with 4 kids playing with a ball. They were playing a certain game with 4 people involved and a hoop. Normally called basketball in the U.S but on the picture it didn't look like basketball to me because basketball looks different to me when i see that picture.

I also noticed in this picture that 2 of the boys were standing right next to each other. One was about to grab the ball and the other was just standing around. But in this picture i mostly thought about sports. I love sports so it gave me the thought of how fun other countries like sports as well.

My quote that I chose is this: "The greatest thing I hoped for in my life is to become a successful person and to have a family and friends to support me, not to be looked at by the color of my skin but also who I am inside." -Samira Durakovic, Yugoslavia. I chose this quote because it makes me think a lot about things you need to be focusing on in life. You don't want to go around the country making a bad reputation of yourself. The quote is a great quote to look-up to later in life. Especially people who feel they are not getting far in life with me very encouraged. People who aren't getting as far in life will be able to because they will be pushed to do their best and for that people will love them. And sooner or later those people will start having a good life because of you. So I'm just saying that a lot of people can be influenced by this quote and i appreciate the author for writing a well thought out quote. It also states that you can't be judged by the color of your skin and I think that is huge for the world that we live in. This country is getting a little weird and we need to start living the right way. There's just too many bad things happening all at once and people can't just stand there and say "what are we going to do?" They have to do what is good in the world and help the world out by acting on the good not the bad.

The Circuit ( Post 1 )

Quote: "We'll manage, viejo. Once work starts, we'll be fine."

Response: I chose this quote because it gave me the thought of are they going to manage. It let me think about the book in depth and description not just words on a page. I thought about if they would manage to go through with this new life and be up for it. Meaning if they don't work hard at what they do they probably aren't going to get far. So if they do work hard and get a job then i truly believe they will be fine.

Question: My Million dollar question is do they manage and work hard enough to match the potential of the certain destination they are trying to reach? I'm a little confused in that area..--- PAGE 7--

Quote: "Remember, we have to keep our promise and pray to el santo nino every day, for a whole year."

Response: I chose this quote because it shows a promise in the book. The promise to pray for a whole year. That's a promise that they have to follow. They have to keep a promise so it helps them in life. If you make a promise and not keep it then theres no point in making the promise especially if its for a whole year. El santo nino is a sacred place to them and i loved how this described a promise they had to keep to get far in life or in my case the book.

Question: My question is if they keep another promise in the book, will they keep it or will it fade into the grey sky? I really want to know if they can keep a promise..

Immigrantion Reflection

A person who enters a different country to live in.
Someone has better living conditions meaning people might come from huts to apartments, job opportunities like business jobs or average Joe jobs, and country disaster might be hard for some people especially if they get a lot of hurricanes. There also could be problems with sexual harassment. Religious beliefs could be a reason because they aren't being accepted or there is excrimination hate. And lastly freedom of speech because someone can be locked up by the government and could be killed or tortured and disappear forever.

People would like to come to our country because in our country every citizen is under protection of the constitution and the bill of rights. In other countries, punishment was really harsh and they would cut off limbs. There punishment for stealing is cutting off limbs. People didn't want to go through that. If someone cut off your limbs for stealing you would dislike the country and try living somewhere else and that's what they did.

In the united states we have language opportunities in schools. We have different culture events.I got to experience different foods like Mexican food and Thai food as well as many other cultural foods. I also experienced certain places like china town that have cultural still embedded in the city.
